When you hear the name Cellar Door, Washington DC, you
would immediately think of the hundreds of folk singers who passed
through its doors, many of whom became household names in the 1960’s
and 1970’s. John Denver was no exception, first playing there as
a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio, later playing solo.
When you hear the name John Denver, you would immediately think of the
song ‘Take me Home, Country Roads’. The truth is that the song
that hit the charts at awe-inspiring speed was written by started by
Bill and
Taffy Danoff and completed by John Denver after one of the Cellar Door
shows.
The association between John Denver and Bill and Taffy Danoff can be
traced back to the heyday of the Cellar Door when John fell in love
with
a song written by Bill and Taffy called ‘I’d Rather be in
Colorado’.
Both Bill and Taffy, known then as Fat City and later as the Starland
Vocal
Band and John became firm friends, collaborating on a number of songs
that
were to become synonymous with John Denver and that were featured on
his
many albums.
Below are the song's written by Bill Danoff for John.
